Side Hinged Wooden Garage Doors

The more traditional style of garage door is now very much in vogue

So, you’ve found a garage door on our website that you want and you’ve decided on the type of design you want, you get all excited about getting it ordered but then you feel like you’ve stumbled on the first hurdle- you don’t actually know enough about garage doors to make an informed decision about which type of door would be best for you. Well the great news is that you probably know a lot more than you think you do (as is always the case with most things) and the even better news is that we are going to talk you through the main types of doors here in order to try and make your decision that little bit easier.

Side-hinged doors are really just the old fashioned traditional garage doors which you will no doubt be used to seeing in your day to day life. They were once very popular but, as space became more and more of a premium and more and more households started to have more than one car, they became less and less used as people found that roller doors or side retracting doors offered them much more space.

However, as the rise in all things vintage and traditional shows no sign of abating, these doors are now coming back into vogue and, if you want to stay one step ahead of the zeitgeist, you should probably think about getting a side-hinged garage door fitted. If you have a fairly long driveway and have a large family vehicle which you wish to keep locked away then this could really be the solution which is best suited to what you need. However, if you have a drive which is often clogged up with cars or indeed, you don’t have a drive at all and your garage opens straight into a shared space or onto a public road then getting a side-hinged door is probably not the best idea for you.

Am i going have to do much working looking after my side hinged garage door?

There is a general myth which pervades the garage door world, and yes indeed there is such a world, which spreads the idea that side hinged garage doors require a lot more maintenance and, ultimately, will not be as durable as roller garage doors or up and over garage doors. This is not actually the case and you will certainly find that, if you decide to choose us to supply your garage door, that is will be just as durable as any other type which you should choose.

The durability should not be a factor in your decision here; your decision should be hinged (excuse the pun!) around whether or not your home and your lifestyle can accommodate this type of door. All this being said, there are still various things you will be able to do in order to keep your garage door swinging smoothly. Clearly the hinges are what are going to need most of your attention and so this is where you should focus your time; keep them well oiled and ensure that any obstructions are kept out of the way when they are opened.

The doors, in order to guarantee the security of your products and belongings, will be very heavy and this can mean that any collisions with cars of other stationery objects can cause quite a bit of damage. This can be avoided by being fairly sensible and simply keeping obstructions and surrounding objects to a minimum.

Why choose a side hinged wooden garage door?

Many people now don’t use their garages to store their cars but these doors are popular with people who do.  Utility rooms or family retreats need something other than a hinge door but for getting a car in and out, especially a very tall one where all the height of the garage is needed, then there couldn’t be a better solution than getting a side hinged door; it removes the need for headroom or for a mechanical motor in the rafters of your garage and thus means that you will be utilising all the space which is available to you; if you have a big four by four or a family saloon car which is very tall then you will already be familiar with the problems which often arise when you’re trying to park them or put them safely away- this type of door could solve all these problems for you.
