Wooden Garage Door Technical Specifications
This is the boring, dry information, but it is also the stuff which you need to be really clear of if you are thinking of ordering a wooden garage door. It would be really terrible to have waited a couple of weeks for your door to arrive only to find out that you don’t have the space to accommodate it once you come to fit it. To avoid disappointment, stress and upheaval just head the specifications which will follow on this page and check, check then check again that the door you are purchasing will be able to be fitted without any undue hassle.
Obviously, all the different types of doors which we have are different and there is a page, in our store, which discusses each of these doors and you should check there for the specifics of any door which you have decided to purchase. For now, however, just have a look at these general points which you need to consider. Get a warm drink first, some of the technical jargon can be hard to digest at first.
The information is mainly for the up and over type of door which are available in the wood finishes which we feature on this website. The hinge garage doors simply open outwards and thus don’t need to be accommodated within

Installation Recommendations
Woodrite Garage Doors are suitable for installation either between the opening or behind the opening. We recommend that Woodrite timber garage doors are installed into a Woodrite steel frame. Alternatively, we recommend the use of a 70mm x 70mm timber frame.
We can supply all doors with or without the addition of a frame. Steel frames are constructed using galvanised steel sections and are available in brown, white or black. Alternatively, we can supply either softwood or hardwood timber frames either base coat stained or factory finished to the same colour as your new door.
For ease of installation, wooden garage doors up to 2438mm x 2286mm that have been ordered with a steel frame are pre fitted to the door during manufacture.Doors over 2438mm x 2286mm will be supplied with a knockdown kit for on site assembly as will all timber frames regardless of size.
For frames installed between the opening a minimum 3mm gap on all 3 sides should be allowed for to factor in any tolerances within the brickwork.
A 19 mm square weather bead should always be fitted to the under-side of the door frame lintel in front of the door to hide the top gap. This feature is integral on Woodrite steel up and over frames.
The minimum headroom requirement for retractable doors above the lower face of the frame is 45mm. A canopy door will require 65mm.

In situations where the door is installed behind the opening the frame legs should protrude into the opening by a minimum of 13mm. This is to provide adequate space to freely operate the door.
Opening Sizes
The dimensions listed on this website are the internal frame dimensions. To allow the door to freely operate within the frame, up and over doors are supplied approx 19mm narrower and 25mm shorter than the ordering size. The use of retractable door gear will reduce the drive through width by 114mm at and above 1050mm from finished floor level. Likewise the drive through height will be reduced by 127mm.
